Locomotives of the 16 Class shall only be assigned to these trains.  The Passenger Department is complaining about excessive smoke and soot from PA units and it is their desire that the newest and most efficient units be used.

Units 32LABC delivered 10/48, however, 32A was had a blown engine and was returned to EMD.  Because of warranty issues, 32LBC was held out of service unit a replacement F3B was sent from EMD.  The replacement B unit was one of four demonstrators build by EMD with plexi-glass sides for training purposes of  mechanical people on various railroads.  EMD replaced the plexi-glass with standard panels and Santa Fe paint scheme and was sent to Santa Fe as second 32A.  The original engine 32A was rebuilt as an F7B, third phase and was used as a demonstration, then sold back to Santa Fe as part of the settlement becoming unit 48A.

 

Units 32 and above came with factory side grills.
