Trains 7 and 8, Fast Mail Express, were commodity trains, or express freight which included mail. The contract the Santa Fe had with the Post Office was to furnish transportation for all mail in the territory assigned. This meant Santa Fe had to haul all mail no matter how much. The same is true for express freight. The railroad is to provide cars to handle loads no matter the quantity, so the train could never be the same from day to day. There were some regular cars and RPO cars, but even that could vary depending on demand. In addition, mail and express cars coming from other railroads were added to these trains. Trans 7 and 8 were also used to deadhead passenger equipment from various terminals as needed. By law, a rider car had to be attached so that any paying passenger could ride.

Basically it worked like this. Mail and Express was loaded into cars as needed. These cars were released to Santa Fe at terminals at major cities, Chicago, Kansas City and Los Angeles. If cars were loaded and ready during the say, they could be dispatched on any train west as long as they didn’t overload the train. The Grand Canyon was used daily for overflow.

Normally mail was loaded in baggage cars. Express could be either baggage cars or passenger box cars. Some cars were used to drop off less than carload freight or mail en-route. A baggage man handled this. The same is true for loading en route. When a baggage man was assigned to a car, the baggage car with a toilet was necessary.

Below are is the assignment it might have each day, but keep in mind, this changed daily. When too much mail or express was accepted, second sections had to be operated. Most times, the second sections did not carry an RPO or working baggage/mail/express cars.
