Chair cars are number starting from number 1 at the B end or Non-vestibule end, therefore, all trains that required advanced chair car reservations shall have the vestibules to the rear.

 

Sleeping cars to be handled in the same way, except Sleeping cars shall have the vestibules to the front in accordance to Passenger Department requirements to match numbered sleeping quarters.

Chair cars 2816 to 2860 were purchased for the Chief and the San Francisco Chief.   20 cars to be assigned to the Chief, with new Chair Car service starting January 1954 and 24 cars to the San Francisco Chief starting in June 1954.  This was a total of 44 cars plus 1 spare.

 

However, Budd started delivering these cars in October 1953 and Santa Fe was not going to let them sit around for the start up of those trains.  As these cars arrived, they were assigned to the El Capitan requiring 35 cars.  In January 1954, the Chief took 20 cars leaving the El Capitan with 25 cars and had to use 44 seat Pullman chair cars to cover the other 10 assignments.

 

Later in June 1954, it was decided to remove the 20 cars from the Chief pool and place them into the San Francisco Chief pool which required 24 cars, leaving 20 cars for the El Capitan.   Santa Fe had already made plans for the new Hi Level El Capitan cars, but held off ordering them until March 1955 to be sure they would be delivered in July 1956 at the same time Disneyland would open.

 

In July 1956, Hi Levels replaced conventional chair cars on the El Capitan and they were released to the pool.  Because these cares 2816 to 2860 had about half of them with conductors desks, those would be 46 seat chair cars and the Passenger Department Reservations considered them 44 seat coaches and allowed conductors to use the extra seats as needed and from then on, 44 seat Pullman chair cars and 46/48 Budd chairs cars were considered the same.

Hi Level Chairs are to arranged whereas the number 1 seat is toward the front of the train, except the first Step down Chair Car in this train shall run backwards, seat 68 to the front.  To identify these cars, the first car running backward will have the 5 lower level windows to the right side or engineers side.  The remainder cars shall have the 2 lower windows to the right side or engineers side.

 

Hi Level Diner shall be run with the three separate upper windows to the front right side or engineers side.

Hi Level Lounge shall be run with the three lower level lounge area on the right side or engineers side.
